TECHMOJA DANCE AND THEATER COMPANY
Black arts in coastal North Carolina needs to build a home. I’m asking you today to support Techmoja’s work in making that happen.
Earlier this year, as I walked out on stage at Thalian Hall in downtown Wilmington, North Carolina a thought came to me “there are no Black arts organizations with a budget in this city or even this region.”
The house was full. I glanced down at the stage. The same stage where white supremist Congressman Alfred Waddell declared “We will never surrender to a ragged group of Negroes, even if we have to choke the Cape Fear River with carcasses.” Hours after this speech, a carefully planned white coup chased Blacks from the region.
If you look up into the balcony at Thalian Hall you see the ghosts of Jim Crow.
I’ve met dozens of Black artists, administrators, dancers, and technicians in our region since I started my journey over a decade ago. However, I’m struck that we have no home. At least not a building or a budgeted organization.
Covid-19 has brought this all into focus. If we are to thrive, we will have to make a home with your support.
Techmoja refuses to be at-risk of closing. The Black arts will thrive. We are asking you to join us as we launch an effort to grow Techmoja from an upstart to a sustained and stable organization. Black arts in the coastal region need a home. We intend to build one.
I want to invite you to help us make this path by walking it together. Please consider supporting Techmoja’s next phase of growth.
