I do not know if you have ever had to watch your son go blind. Our son Fadhili (aka Reggie) has Keratoconus.
Our local doctors keep working with us, but answers seem so far away. We are told about “cross-linking” which our insurance will not pay for and “corneal transplants” which our insurance will cover, but the doctors is hesitant because of Reggie’s age. His contacts work for only a short time and then we have to get another pair. He is down to being able to only work a few hours each day. He so much wants to be on his own, finish college, learn to drive, and find a girl. He is such a sweet humble young man that everybody loves. The other night he asked if we could have a family meeting. He wanted to apologize for being a burden; not being able to work more; and to help more around the house. It brakes our hearts.
We live in the Dallas, TX area. A specialist in LA awarded us a grant to do a portion of a proceedure called Holcomb CR-3 Crosslinking will help stop the progression of the Keratoconus. A second procedure we were not aware of has had major success in returning vision to its patience. It is not covered by our medical. The entire procedure if we can do it is going to cost $15,000. We found this out today at 11:30. We are checking our resources. The second procedure Intacts is scheduled to be performed three days from now.
