In August of this year my wife, Betsy, and I were given the greatest news of our lives: she was pregnant with our first child. In December, as Betsy was four months pregnant, we were given the most devastating news of our lives: she was diagnosed with breast cancer. The news came as a crushing blow. We were dealing with the excitement and nerves that all first-time parents experience. The addition of such a terrifying health concern left us scared, saddened and just…lost. Shortly after giving birth to our son, Betsy underwent a bilateral mastectomy. Weeks after that, chemotherapy began. The process has been difficult and there’s a long road ahead.
A few words about Betsy: She is the kindest, most honest, loving and selfless person I have ever known. I fell in love with her for all of these reasons, married her to be around them forever. What I have realized through all of this is that my wife’s greatest attribute is something I guess I always knew, but had not been privileged to see every day. She is THE STRONGEST person I have ever met. A first-time mother, a special education teacher and a woman fighting cancer with poise, dignity and tenacity. She is truly one of a kind.
It must be said, however, that neither of us would be strong enough to handle this alone. We have been blessed with the most amazing support from family, friends and most humbling of all, complete strangers. With Betsy unable to resume work due to her chemotherapy treatments, there has been added stress along this journey. We are grateful for all that have touched our lives and work hard to pass that kindness along to others.
