Abroad - Alfombras in Antigua

My name is Connor Walden, and I am an artist that focuses on how art can be used to create, inspire, and stimulate communities. I am currently a second-year at The University of Texas at Austin studying Studio Art and Marketing.
Shown here is a video of a "process-piece" that I did with a few friends and a group of kids near College Station. The idea behind the process-piece is that everyone involved is the artist, and that growth can be found in everyone involved in making the art.
When I heard about this trip to Antigua through UT to see the Alfombras Celebracion, I was very excited to hear that not only does another country do a "process-piece" of their own nature, but that it is embedded in their culture.
The Alfombras Celebracion is a way for the citizens of Antigua, Guatemala to celebrate Holy Week up until Easter.The celebration is an ephemeral process that involves the entire community making alfombras out of saw dust and other transient materials, only to be trampled on by a parade at the end of the week.
I noticed a tie between the celebration and my "process-pieces".
Although my process-pieces are an infant in comparison to the maturity of the Alfombras in Antigua, I would love the opportunity to experience, first hand, the making of an alfrombra in Antigua. This would be an opportunity to understand more fully the depth of the process of making an alfombra, watching it disappear after a parade, and being left with the community that grew over the week.
