I have been given the extraordinary chance to further my education with a Ph.D. at Trinity College Dublin. Due to time and financial constraints, I need to raise money for travel and visa associated cost much sooner than I ever expected. School starts in early April but I need to apply for the visa by late February so time is of the essence.
My research idea is that Brexit presents another milestone event in the Working Class Protestant (WCP) changing identity. My aim is to identify and examine economic, social, and historical elements that Brexit may bring forth of the WCP identity using an ethnographic exploration. I believe a study of this type is not presently underway and can bring a unique perspective in timing by engaging with the community at the grassroots as they navigate the final stages of Brexit and post-Brexit in real-time. I plan to use social identity theory, chosen glory, chosen trauma, and the insight approach to bear on the question.
I never imagined that I could warrant such an opportunity as TCD is taking on me. I follow the news daily from Northern Ireland and believe that my question and the results of my work may inform government policy in the UK and to the next country looking at a Brexit style event.
My wife Amy gave me a wonderful surprise for our 18th wedding anniversary in 2005. She paid for my return to college!
Ten years later I graduated with high honors from UVa. At the urging of very forward thinking professors, they pointed me to George Mason University, School for Conflict Analysis and Resolution where I further developed my interest in Northern Ireland graduating with high honors in 2016. Today, I sit as Vice-Chair on the S-CAR Advisory Board among so many wonderful and learned people.
The money raised now will put me on a plane ($500) with visa in hand ($1200), pay for my initial health insurance payment ($250) and allow me to rent a place close to campus ($1100).
Please help make my Ph.D. a reality.
