This GoFundMe campaign has a goal of $3,500 in order to fund a plaque in Commander “Willie” McCool’s memory that will serve to inspire students as they enter the science wing at the newly refurbished high school in Anacortes, Washington. Commander “Willie” McCool was a father, astronaut, navy pilot and national hero whose intellectual curiosity and love for learning will serve to inspire students at Anacortes High School in Washington State. Willie was piloting the space shuttle Columbia (STS-107) when its mission tragically ended upon reentry in February 2003. Once, when attending a parent teacher conference at AHS, the math and science teacher told him he was excited to meet an astronaut. Willie replied that the teacher’s job was much more important than what he did. Classic Willie … incredibly humble and genuine. It is fitting that the crew of STS-107 conducted 80 experiments on their final mission. Please consider donating to this campaign. Anacortes High School’s students will be inspired by Willie’s vision for education as they pass by his image and words on the way to class.
