Funds needed for tenant facing eviction.

Robert is a professional chef living in La Cite (3550 Jeanne Mance), an apartment building owned by Oxford Properties, a property management company and eviction mill with multiple buildings across the world. He has lived in the building for over two years, paying a whopping $1,325 monthly for a one-bedroom (studio) apartment.

During the pandemic, Robert lost his job and fell two months behind on rent; since then, he has found another job and has returned to paying his rent. Alongside this, he has attempted to pay back the overdue rent in installments but has been refused by Oxford management many times. In the end, Robert was taken to court and lost his case. The presiding judge showed blatant bias toward Oxford.

Following the court case, new prospective tenants are being shown Robert’s apartment, which is listed as having a higher rent than what Robert had been paying. It is clear that the company’s refusal to work out a payment plan with Robert and the subsequent eviction were deliberate acts, with the singular aim of getting in new tenants who will pay higher rent.

We have succeeded in postponing Robert’s eviction until August 26th, and he has found a new apartment to move into. However, La Cité recently obtained the permission of a court to empty Robert’s bank account. This means he no longer has the money to afford first month’s rent or utilities. Without stable housing, the job Robert has found will not take him on.

Cependant, Oxford a récemment obtenu l'autorisation d'un tribunal de vider le compte bancaire de Robert. Cela signifie qu'il n'a plus l'argent pour payer le premier mois de loyer ou les services publics. Sans logement stable, le travail que Robert a trouvé ne le prendra pas.
