Fundraising For Students In Tanzania

Dear all,
My name is Lucie Saadé-Augier and I am a recent law school graduate from the Paris 2 Pantheon-Assas University.
After spending the past year involved in a couple internships and before pursuing my career as a lawyer, I decided to volunteer as a teacher at two schools in the city of Arusha, Tanzania.
Through teaching, my goal is to gain a better understanding of the way in which the Tanzanian educational system functions, in order to properly pinpoint the ways I could personally be of service and contribute to any shortages schools might have.
This work is of great importance because the majority of primary school students doesn’t have access to secondary school education, as shown by the fluctuation of the pass rates in the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE).
Indeed, education statistics of the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training (MoEVT) show that pass rate in the PSLE has been varying significantly on an annual basis in the past decade. Between 2001 and 2006, the percentage of children passing the PSLE increased from 28.6% to 70.5%. However, the pass rate dropped from 70.5% to 54.2% in 2007, and it dropped further to 49.4% in 2009, only to slightly improve in 2010.
Broad regional inequalities in the pass rate in the PSLE are well documented in Tanzania. For example, in the 2008 examinations, the highest pass rate was just below 74% in Dar es Salaam region (eastern Tanzania), while the lowest pass rate stood at 34% in Shinyanga region (western Tanzania). The reason behind this gap is that large disparities in education resources exist across geographic zones.
I am raising money especially to purchase basic necessities that will enhance the quality of education in Cheti School and Nice School, both located in the city of Arusha.
The first of these schools lacks the proper infrastructure and space to accommodate the 83 students that attend it. At the present time, all of these students are crammed into one classroom, which disregards their different learning abilities, the age gap between the students and their varying potentials. The goal is to raise enough money to build an extension to this classroom to provide an additional learning area for children with similar educational needs and abilities.
As for the second school, there is a severe shortage in basic learning utensils and stationary such as desks, books, text books and pencils. The teachers themselves also lack the proper qualifications to teach primary school students. Here, the goal is twofold: first, to provide the necessary equipment to facilitate the education of the children, and to also provide the teachers with the opportunities to gain the appropriate qualifications and credentials by way of courses and lessons.
All the money I raise will be going directly to those schools. Any amount that you’re willing to contribute will help, five or ten dollars/euros might seem like pocket change, however it could go a long way to enhance the quality of those children’s lives.
