Fundraiser for Sister Rosemary and St. Monica's

When your hero needs help…

During the Covid-19 outbreak and response, there has been a lot of talk about heroes. And while we want to honor those that are putting their lives on the line treating the sick, we want to remember another hero whose work has spanned decades helping those that needed it and who now needs our help.  My hero is Sr. Rosemary Nyirumbe. All 5 feet 3 inches of power and grace. The very same woman who provided refuge and training to girls, women, and children who were abducted by the Lord’s Resistance Army click to watch here and continues to serve women and children displaced by conflict and disadvantaged by circumstance; the woman who built three schools, who nurtures children in need of care and protection, and continues the fight for justice and equality in Uganda. Yup, that’s my hero (TIME100 thinks so too!).
TIME100 Sister Rosemary

You see, with all the closings, shutdowns and travel restrictions that have come with quarantine and social distancing protocols necessary to prevent the spread of Covid19, many outreach programs through nearly a dozen higher education programs were canceled, and with it, their financial support. Sr. Rosemary’s operations at St. Monica’s are feeling a serious funding pinch and facing difficult decisions. She is worried about the need to shut down some of the operations during this global pandemic.

A few of us who have worked with Sr. Rosemary are calling ourselves “The Friends of St. Monica’s” and we have come together to see what we could do to help. We decided that one way to help Sr. Rosemary was to reach out to our friends, families, and networks and ask for them to gofund St. Monica’s so that Sr. Rosemary can continue serving others. Though there are a lot of worthy causes right now, we are trying to raise $25,000 to go toward operations at St. Monica’s during this time of need.

Sister Rosemary and St. Monica’s, (both campuses in Gulu and Atiak), have many needs.  Specifically, we’re raising funds for the teachers, staff, orphan mothers and drivers’ salary.  There are food, utility costs, and money is needed for medical supplies (including COVID related soap and disinfectant) and medications.  Fortunately, Sister Rosemary now has a farm with crops and livestock, but donations are needed for seed, and feed for the farm animals.   Medication is also often needed for the livestock.  These crops and animals support the young mothers and children living at St. Monica’s.  Please, consider these needs when deciding whether to donate.

Times are tough, so if you are not in a place to give financially remember that you have resources besides money. Other ways you can help include --

·      holding Sr. Rosemary and St. Monica’s up in prayer;
·      share this campaign with your others;
·      wear a mask, stay home if you are sick, thank grocery clerks, meat packers, and the folks who keep public spaces clean, and thank the folks driving the buses, taxies, and subways.
·      if you are a professor or teach study abroad, consider a trip to Gulu, Uganda when this crisis is over. The impact on your students will be immeasurable!
·      be kind.

Our hero will take all the help she can get.
