Funding to stay in University

Donation protected
Hello.
My name is Christian Bryden, and all my life I have wanted to be a scientist. I was adopted by a family living in Saint Kitts and my early education was from this island.

I was a ‘straight A’ student throughout my academic career with various awards throughout including valedictorian of my high school and college and was recognised by the Government of Saint Kitts and Nevis who awarded me a scholarship to attend an integrated degree of MSci Natural Sciences and am currently in my second year of four.

However, whilst being eternally grateful for this scholarship, it only partially covers the tuition fees. For me, it has been an emotional rollercoaster, because each day I come closer to this dream of becoming a scientist; but also that I'm faced with the harsh reality of not completing my education due to financial difficulties.

I am an international student, so my tuition is significantly higher. Until now, my adoptive mother was providing me with assistance, but her health is failing her and she is no longer able to able to finance any of the shortfall. Despite juggling odd jobs over the summer and around my course, I have only been able to meet my basic needs and at this moment I am currently in arrears with my tuition fees. I fear that without your financial support I will be unable to complete the further two years and to achieve my goal of becoming a scientist.

This situation is way, way beyond my capabilities. I have done everything within my own ability to make ends meet, but with the amount due, I need all the help I can get.

My time is limited, as I have been informed that I will not be allowed to re-enrol next year if I am still in debt by May to prevent me from getting into any further debt.

I believe that if I'm able to show my university that I am raising a significant amount for tuition, they might be lenient with me and allow me, my mother, (and you all) more time to come up with the rest, even if my deadline isn’t met.

In my 2 years at UCL, I have worked hard to ensure that my grades consistently reflect my passion for this career. My course is quite demanding, like many at UCL, but my passion for science has seen my grades remain at a first according to the university’s standards.

I am working towards a career in Research for both Physics and Chemistry and hope to help develop advancements in material sciences and quantum mechanics which is currently helping make people’s lives better worldwide.

It has been a long road to get here but I have been given the chance that very few from my island have gotten.

To have it all end now, like this, is a feeling I have no words to adequately describe. But I'm hoping against hope that I do not have to experience such crushing disappointment.

Science is my passion, and I’m sure in all the infinite alternate realities, I wouldn’t be doing anything else. Realistically speaking, I know this is an uphill battle but I’ve never been one to give up on my life’s achievements so far without a fight and I’m looking for anybody that can join me. Even if this page doesn't work out, I can go back home knowing that I have explored every avenue and hopefully still be someone for my countrymen to look up to.

I understand that it is a lot, putting everything out there like this. It took the weekly reminders that ‘Financial Action is Required’ and my mother, who means the world to me, breaking down over the phone, for me to come to this decision and several days to compose this plea.

More than anyone else, I know how impossible all of this looks. But whilst I live and breathe, I will hope beyond all hopes.

In these types of situations, little is much. A pound will go a really long way.
The target amount is only a fraction of what I need to stay in university and I’m hoping that will buy me more time to come up with the shortfall.

Please help if you can. And if you can't, then please, PLEASE share this page as widely as you can. I'll also appreciate prayers and well wishes in this time.

(PS: I've attached my grades below, as curated by my school.)

Thank you for reading.
And thank you so much, for trying.
