Hello, everyone! I appreciate every one of you who has taken the time to come across this GoFundMe today! I am very excited to be starting my program at A.T. Still University as a Doctor of Occupational Therapy student. Years of completing observation hours, participating in internships, taking community college courses, and putting in countless hours of writing supplemental essays finally paid off! I am very passionate about occupational therapy and making the field a more equitable and just profession AND service for all communities, particularly marginalized/medically underserved communities that do not traditionally have the same access and knowledge to rehabilitation services. This degree will empower me to achieve several of my goals - some of them which include establishing my own private practice that especially advocates for and prioritizes care for underserved communities such as my own Black and African communities and pursuing leadership roles that empower the next generation of aspiring OTs passionate about correcting and transforming healthcare disparities.
As a first-generation graduate student, it has been quite difficult navigating different ways of funding my graduate schooling. I will be moving to Arizona to begin my program in July 2021, and the cost alone of tuition plus moving expenses is substantial. I am funding my education through a large amount of student loans, for there are not many large scholarships and grants for professional students in fields such as occupational therapy. The rigor of my graduate program will require my sole focus on my studies instead of worrying about acquiring supplemental income (such as working a part-time job) to pay for school-related and living expenses.
Therefore, if you are able to financially support my transition to graduate school, every dollar would be a tremendous help in narrowing the student loan amount I will be required to borrow. Thank you for being a blessing to my professional aspirations!
