Let's fight malnutrition and build inclusive food chains value

Sahara Sahel Foods is a social enterprise based in Niger, that processes the fruits, seeds and leaves of the wild trees of the Sahel’s drylands into quality foods. We make oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids, protein-rich and gluten-free couscous and flours, vitamin-dense fruit powders, nuts, biscuits, sauce leaves, spices, jams and more.

Founded in 2014, our mission is to improve the well-being of the rural people of the Sahel. We do this through a business partnership that brings them revenue from the sustainable harvesting of produce from our native trees, whilst offering natural, nutritious, tasty foods to consumers. Within this partnership, we support rural communities in the process of regreening degraded fields and lands, strengthening the natural resources that are serving as the basis for their emerging livelihoods.

Sahara Sahel Foods operates in the provinces of Zinder, Maradi and Diffa.

In Niger, the chronic malnutrition rate among children aged 5 years or less is as high as 40%. The number of adult women suffering from anaemia lies at 60%. This endemic malnutrition among the young and the growing prevalence of anaemia among adults are the effects of poverty and the lack of dietary diversity. In fact, the only economic activities possible in most villages are rainfed agriculture and herding, whereas rainfall is low.

The solution we propose at Sahara Sahel Foods is simple, effective and inexpensive. It is to make clever use of our wild desert trees to produce food rich in protein and vitamins. The product we are offering today is an entirely natural, tree based porridge, called Hanza Fruit Porridge.

The “hanza fruit porridge” is made of seed flour of hanza – an ancient tree food found exclusively in the Sahel, and recognised by traditional consumers as one of the best sources for lasting energy. Rich in starch, it contains some 20% protein and a good supply of zinc. This flour is combined with the dry powder of wild jujube fruits – rich in vitamins A and C, natural sugars, calcium and iron. Finally, the product is strengthened by dry boabab fruit powder, which is often qualified as a “super-food” and is one of the ten natural products with the highest vitamin C concentrations in the world.

Our customer tests have shown this porridge to be appreciated by all categories of the nigerien population, cutting across social classes and age groups.

Through our mission at Sahara Sahel Foods, and through this particular product – “hanza fruit porridge” – we are making our contribution to the quest for food security in the Sahel. We are committed to doing so by offering natural foods, free from artficial, synthetic and chemical additives and treatments, whilst being able to respond to the nutritional needs of rural and urban people alike.

How can you support Sahara Sahel Foods?

Since we were founded, our enterprise has depended on external financial support in order to create markets for our novel food products. However, our objective remains to become financially self-sustainable. The market for Sahara Sahel Foods’ products has grown by an average yearly rate of 43%, giving us the hope that we can become profitable within a few years. In the meantime, Sahara Sahel Foods still needs your support to complete its incubation track.

Therefore, we are seizing the occasion to request your help. Being a social enterprise, we would like to function as much as possible through market mechanisms, as this pushes us to optimise our operations to be a qualified player in the market for inclusive, natural and regeneratively produced foods.

How will the funds raised by this campaign be used?

Your contribution will help boost consumption of this tree food, whilst serving people in dire situations.

It will be used to purchase “Hanza Fruit Porridge” and certain other products for third-party beneficiaries – institutions and populations with needs – who will receive it for free. School cantines, health centers, help centers for women, youth or children and deprived people of the Zinder province will be the beneficiaries, along with internally displaced people in the country. The latter have been growing in numbers due to the problems of terrorism, and apart from having had to suffer traumatizing horrors or see them happen to family and neighbours, they have also typically had their livestock and food reserves robbed before being forced to migrate to new areas where they have no land to farm.

The products delivered will correspond to the value of your contribution, minus potential delivery costs and money transfer fees.

The price of the “Hanza Fruit Porridge” is 1250 F (€1.91) for a 950g bag, which produces around 6L of nourishing porridge when cooked.

In case of specific wishes, the products corresponding to your contribution can be given to a beneficiary of your choice. If this is your wish, or if you prefer that your contribution be a general support to Sahara Sahel Foods, please specify this in an accompanying email to  [email redacted].

This campaign is also available on the Kwendoo platform, for those feeling more comfortable with it:

If you are based in Niger, you can make a direct money transfer to the number +227-94 73 11 73, in the name of Sahara Sahel Foods, or a bank transfer to our account: 25321061221-49 SONIBANK. Please accompany your contribution with a brief email or instant message in this case.

On behalf of the 1500 fruit collectors active in propagating native trees and harvesting their produce, we would like to extend you our thanks. A solid market for “Hanza Fruit Porridge” will allow them to consolidate and expand their activities, countering effectively poverty, migration and the temptations of the youth by the luring calls of terrorist movements.
