Fund a Profiling Bed for Abi

Hello!

I'm Abi, I'm 28, and in October 2020 I suffered a life changing spinal cord injury after an abscess destroyed two vertebrae and a disc in my neck. I also have facet arthrosis and degenerative disc disease in my lumbar spine. Both of these conditions cause me significant pain, as well as difficulty positioning myself comfortably in bed. I need to change my position frequently while sleeping which I find incredibly hard to do.

I'm raising money for an electric profiling bed and supportive mattress to help support my needs and comfort. At the moment, I am using a standard double bed with a standard double mattress.

After a lot of research, the best and most affordable solution that I could find for me is the Dreams Sleepmotion 400i bed frame and a compatible memory foam mattress. My current mattress is not compatible with the frame and would not be suitable.

This bed frame and mattress combination would enable me to easily and independently adjust my position in bed to relieve pain and fatigue, as well as helping me to sit up independently.

I have tried both other options which are available to me; a mattress lifter, and a hospital-style profiling single bed.

The mattress lifter fits under the mattress onto an existing bed frame. I have had two of these, and both have quickly broken and become unusable. Due to how they fit, they also create a permanent rise and tilt in the mattress which can be very uncomfortable. The straps holding it in place constantly had to be re-fitted due to coming loose.

The profiling beds provided by local community services come in a single format only, and are very hospital-style. I found being in one in my own home extremely distressing due to the similarity of being in a hospital environment; I have professionally diagnosed PTSD due to my experiences with my spinal cord injury and subsequent emergency surgery. While some people get on really well with them, unfortunately I did not and severe issues quickly became apparent. The provided mattresses are also extremely uncomfortable for me.

A Life-Changing Bed

Being able to rest comfortably, both and night and when I need to during the day, would be truly life changing for me. It would help so much with pain management and independence. It truly would mean so much to me to be able to have this lifeline.

My mum and I cannot afford to buy one ourselves, which is why I'm doing this fundraiser. While I do receive PIP, it's not enough to cover or save for a new bed as I have to use it to fund my wheelchair.
