Fulu Miziki means music from the garbage or sounds from the trash. This eco-friendly afro-futuristic punk ensemble is based in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, and was founded by Pisko Crane, who joined forces with performing artists Aicha Mena Kanieba, Le Meilleur, DeBoul, La Roche, Padou, Sekelembele, and Tche Tche. Their handmade costumes, masks and instruments are 100% recycled; for Fulu Miziki “everything can be recovered and re-enchanted” and trash is an essential part of their musical ideology. Their unique sound supports a pan-African message of artistic liberation, peace and takes a severe look at the ecological situation in the DRC and the whole world.
Fulu Miziki have been in Uganda since September 2019, creating new work and music ahead of their first European tour in June 2020. Corona virus changed everything and found them under lockdown in Kampala, unable to travel back to their families in DRC or go on tour. True to form they have carried on developing new work and creating sick slick beats. But let’s be honest – slick beats are not paying anybody in these corona times…
The eight members of Fulu Miziki now need your support today in order to make it through the rest of lockdown. On behalf of Arnold Aganze and Fulu Miziki, Charlotte Spowage is raising funds that will be used to help this band to survive, stay productive and keep bringing you their mad creativity and tracks, whilst we wait for this to all be over.
