The importance of Mount Kinabalu to Sabah and it’s people cannot be understated, serving as a centerpiece in Sabahan culture, biodiversity, and tourism. Whether one sees the mountain every day from their doorstep or has heard legends and whispers of its beauty and only seen its silhouette on the state flag, surely none would doubt what a treasure this natural phenomenon is to Sabah and Malaysia.
We are 4 Fulbright English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) working in public secondary schools in Sipitang, Sabah, Malaysia. Currently, we are organizing an English camp that would take 16 of our students to the summit of Mt. Kinabalu, the highest peak in Malaysia (13,435 ft)! Despite the fact that Mt. Kinabalu is located in Sabah, our students' own state, summiting is very expensive. Although we have received a very generous grant from our sponsor Conoco Phillips, we still need a little more help!
Those who have climbed Mt. Kinabalu recall it as challenging, fulfilling, and awe-inspiring. Our students will be able to watch the sunrise above the clouds with their peers, and we believe that this will be an experience they will treasure for the rest of their lives. In order to have been selected for the hike, the students will have had to demonstrate determination and perseverance in improving their English abilities. Their efforts in studying English will culminate in summiting their country's highest mountain.
A donation of anywhere from a meal to the full cost for one student makes a large difference in making this goal of ours a reality!
> A donation of $4 covers a student’s night at the homestay leading up to the hike
> A donation of $30 covers one meal for ALL participants during the trip
> A donation of $250 USD covers the cost of one student's WHOLE hike up the mountain!
These students have been the highlights of our time here and are more than deserving of this experience. If you are able to give, they will be immensely grateful.
