Shiva's Battle Against Stage III Breast Cancer

Our friend and colleague, Shiva, needs your help as she battles Stage III Breast Cancer.
Shiva started experiencing headaches, fatigue, joint pain, and tenderness in her breasts in early November 2019. In November, Shiva was dismissed from scheduling a mammogram at Kaiser because they decided she was not old enough to require the exam. They told her that what she was experiencing could not be breast cancer. Eight months later, she took a leave of absence for carpal tunnel surgery and at that moment discovered she was living with Stage III Breast Cancer.
November 20th, 2020, Shiva lost insurance coverage through her employer. As a nonprofit struggling with the economic effects of COVID-19, her employer was not able to continue her coverage while she was on leave. In December, she will be selecting a Covered California plan and will be paying out of pocket for an insurance plan that provides coverage to a patient with a pre-existing condition.
After 5 long and tiring months of chemotherapy, Shiva’s last day of chemo is December 10. The fight isn’t over after chemotherapy. In 2021, Shiva will be preparing for a complicated double mastectomy surgery and radiation followed by hormone therapy.
Those who know Shiva would say she is ambitious, compassionate, considerate, courageous, and generous. Her zeal for music, dance, and life in general is electrifying. Her love for people and animals is limitless. She has an infectious, fiery personality, a wise spirit, and is passionate about diversity, equity, and inclusion for women.
Please help us raise financial aid for Shiva to help with insurance coverage premiums, the financial burden of hospital bills that insurance does not cover, rent, food, and necessities she will need to stay optimistic and comfortable as she continues to fight this terrible disease.
