Friendly Island (SXM) Needs Friends

As many of you know, Emily and I have been going to Sint Maarten for over thirty years. In doing so we have formed relationships with wonderful people who we have come to love like family. Many of you have met and formed your own special bonds with these people during your own visits to the Friendly Island.
Our friends now need our support. Hurricance Irma has devasted the island leaving them homeless and without running water, electricity, access to food and basic necessities. We have already begun the process of organizing shipments containing these basics and hope for the first of the supplies to reach the island shortly.
While major government actions are underway to help those in need, we certainly can do more for our loved ones. Our focus for this campaign is both short term and long term as recovery from Irma will not be quick but rather will take years. It is for that reason that we hope to devote a good portion of the funds raised to assisting those most in need and most vulnerable, such as children in orphanages, the elderly and the disabled. Long after the government sponsored relief efforts end these individuals will remain in need. We cannot let them be forgotten.
Many of you have already expressed to us the desire to help in any way possible. For that reason we have created this campaign in order to help consolidate those efforts. Every single dollar contributed will go directly to those in need as we work to fulfill our mission. There will be no adminstrative fees. A 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation is being established and we will update this page with the specifics on that entity once it is fully registered.
All decisions regarding the distribution and allocation of the funds raised and supplies obtained will be made under the direction of Claret Connor and his wife Emilia Connor. Claret is a member of Sint Maarten's parliament, former minister of tourism and a lifetime resident of the island.
