FRIENDS OF K.C. FRIENDS OF TREES

Donation protected
I met Kevin Charles Yessian (K.C.) in August 1999 during my freshman year while living in the dorms at the University of Kansas.   We immediately became inseparable.  Prior to moving away for college I grew up in a household with three brothers; K.C. immediately filled that void when I got to KU.  At times we were the best of friends and at other times we were at each other's throats-just like brothers.  We laughed, fought, and philosophized our way through 4+ years of undergrad, with conversation ranging from the highly intellectual (or so we thought) to the silliest of silly.   After college, I made my way north to Minneapolis and K.C. west to Portland. Despite six-month lulls in communication, we could pick up right where we left off as if nothing had changed.

K.C. had a giant personality with the type of contagious laugh that could fill a room.  He could be the most frustrating, hardheaded person (arguing every minute detail to its bitter end), while at the same time, the most genuine and caring confident you could ask for in a friend.  He touched so many people with his kindness and enthusiasm. His passing hurts most because of how special a person he was.  The realities of life are as cruel as they are beautiful in that the closer the bonds we develop to kindred souls during lifetime, the more devastating it is when they slip away.

I am running the Boston Marathon on April 18, 2016 in celebration of K.C.'s life.  K.C. died way too young, but the influence he had on the people around him far exceeds his 34 years.  His untimely passing is a reminder of just how precious and fleeting life can be.

Please support me in celebrating K.C.'s life by making a donation to the Portland based organization, Friends of Trees.  Friends of Trees is a 501(c) 3 nonprofit whose mission is to bring people together to plant and care for city trees and green spaces in Pacific Northwest communities.

K.C. was a brother to me and I will miss him everyday.  My hope is that that trees planted using the funds donated in honor of K.C.'s life will thrive in the city and community that he loved and that his influence will continue to be felt.
