“It Takes a Village”
Everyone can hit a “bump in the road” in this lifetime. Sometimes we may need to ask for help, as hard as that may be.
Elaine Read-Cole has been in end-stage kidney failure since March of 2016, receiving dialysis 3 times a week for that period of time. Miraculously, she has now found a donor and is ready to receive a kidney transplant!
End stage renal (kidney) failure is terminal, but with life saving intervention that person can live for a number of years. The best intervention currently is a kidney transplant from a living donor. Elaine has had the good fortune of finding a matching kidney from her brother-in-law Doug Barton. Doug is married to Elaine’s sister Barbara. Together they both have opened their hearts and their time to help Elaine live. Doug is a perfect match for the transplant!
We are currently in the pre-op stages with Mass General Hospital, with the transplant to follow with a tentative date of late October 2017. Fortunately, Elaine and her husband Gary have health insurance that will cover many of the medical expenses. Unfortunately, health insurance does not cover all of the expenses incurred with the transplant process. Post op there is an expected six week recovery period for Doug. Barbara, Doug’s wife will be his main care giver during his recovery. Doug is in property maintenance and will not receive any income or benefits during this time period.
An eight week recovery period is expected for Elaine. Gary will use as much vacation time as he has, but beyond that there will be no income during that time for all parties, however, the bills still have to be paid. There will also be frequent trips back in to Mass General for Elaine, which is expected, but also adds up.
The whole experience is quite daunting but with a little help from our friends we can do this!
