This Tuesday, Denis’s father was let out of the hospital to go home. His surgeries went well, and currently he is starting the long period of rehabilitation. The money raised by this campaign helped Denis to make travel arrangements to see his father soon, the funds will also help to pay for the recovery.
At this stage, we have decided to finish the campaign: it was a great success, and Denis is deeply thankful to everyone who supported him at this horrible moment. Your help means a lot!
Several days ago our Pitt Slavic PhD student Denis Saltykov learned that his parents were involved in a terrible bus collision in Kaliningrad, Russia. His mother did not survive; his father was left severely injured and hospitalized, awaiting surgery.
It is likely that Denis's father will need substantial long-term rehabilitation care. Denis is struggling with putting together a plan to move forward despite travel restrictions, visa challenges (the US embassy is closed), COVID.
In the meantime, he is also trying to figure out the best course of action regarding his university status, his fellowship, and his current course load. Should Denis return to Russia to help with family issues (including his father’s rehabilitation), he will face the nearly insurmountable challenge of re-entry into the U.S to continue at Pitt. This crisis has already prevented his wife, Eva Ivanilova, from beginning her graduate studies in our department.
Pitt students, staff, and faculty have set up this campaign to help defray rehabilitation expenses for Denis's father.
We cannot do much, but we are able to help Denis with the substantial financial obligations he is facing. We are writing to request that you find it in your hearts to provide some financial assistance to Denis in this difficult time.
