Dear Friends, Family, and Neighbors,
I’m reaching out with a deep sense of gratitude and concern. As many of you know, over the past few years, our cabin in Old Fort, North Carolina has become our home—a peaceful retreat where the beauty of nature surrounds us. Our "Hotel Vidal-Inn" has welcomed many of you, and for those who haven’t yet had the chance to visit, you’ve always been invited, and that invitation still stands.
I don’t need to elaborate on the immense devastation that Western North Carolina has recently endured. Just two weeks ago, we were preparing to welcome thousands of visitors for the annual fall foliage spectacle. Despite being colorblind, even I can appreciate the beautiful hues of the season. But this year, instead of the vibrant colors of fall, we’re seeing only brown—mud, dirt, and debris. Mother Nature had other plans.
As I write this, Old Fort remains without electricity or internet, and the roads leading to town have been washed away. I know it’s difficult to imagine the scale of the destruction, but it’s something you truly must see to believe.
The good news is that Hotel Vidal-Inn is safe and intact. However, our town, along with nearby Chimney Rock, has not been as fortunate. Chimney Rock has been completely wiped out by the raging river, and Old Fort is buried beneath layers of mud and debris. It will take months for life to return to a new normal after the storm, much like adjusting to a post-COVID world. But Old Fort is resilient—it will rebuild and come back stronger.
I apologize if this message is a bit lengthy, but I wanted to update those I haven’t been able to reach. Communication remains sporadic. For those of you who have checked in on us, thank you. The most common question I’ve been asked is, “What can I do? How can I help?” After many sleepless nights, I think I’ve found the answer.
Old Fort and Western North Carolina need your help. Please disregard the messages suggesting you stay away—instead, consider visiting and volunteering to assist in the recovery efforts. Stay at a nearby hotel, bring supplies, and lend a hand. As I often say, it takes a village. And if you can’t find accommodations, come stay with us at Hotel Vidal-Inn. We’d love to host you, work side by side to clean up, and afterward, share a signature margarita by the fire. Not only will you be helping, but you’ll also be supporting the local economy.
If traveling isn’t an option for you, or if it’s too difficult right now, please consider donating. I never thought I’d be asking for this, but the need is too great, and it’s something I feel compelled to do. This is not for the broader region of Western North Carolina—Asheville will receive plenty of federal aid—but for our small town of Old Fort. Every dollar and every hour of volunteer work will go directly to helping our local elementary school and volunteer firehouse, both of which were severely damaged.
So, to answer your questions:
How are we? Heartbroken, but hopeful.
How is Hotel Vidal-Inn? In good shape, ready to host.
How can you help? Visit, roll up your sleeves, or donate.
Please feel free to DM me if you’re interested in visiting or want more details.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your love and support.
Warm regards,
Tony and Miriam
