F(r)ictions 2023: Help keep our programme going!

Donation protected
Hey, I'm Anuka and I'm the director of F(r)ictions: we are looking for donations to go towards putting on our 2023 programme!

F(r)ictions is a film screening series for experimental short film, with events taking place three times annually. We select thematic groupings of short films and screen these either in person or online. Following four years of events in London, UK, F(r)ictions is moving to Tbilisi, Georgia, for one year, where we will host collaborative screenings, putting on experimental short film for new audiences.

About donations:
We are currently planning for springtime events. Arts funding is very inaccessible to us so we have decided to try to raise a small amount! Donations will go towards accessibility arrangements - for example, we would love to be able to provide subtitles in both English and Georgian languages, to create a cultural exchange and be inclusive of local audiences. We will also put money towards participating filmmaker fees. Funds permitting, we will hire an interpreter to provide translation during our spring events, permitting Q&A sessions with our audiences. As part of our cultural exchange, we would love to provide money towards hosting a co-curator who will bring a selection of international film to Tbilisi, to run alongside local shorts. Being able to put on Tbilisi events will also allow us to hold conversations around experimental filmmaking and the possibilities of creating films on low-budgets, utilising DIY techniques.

About F(r)ictions:
F(r)ictions began as a reaction to the closing of 150 queer spaces across London between 2000 and 2018: around this basis, we aim to prioritise marginalised filmmakers, and are especially keen to encourage low-budget and low production-value filmmaking. We create space for DIY film and video that may not fit into traditional festival or gallery settings. F(r)ictions allows filmmakers to screen incomplete projects, to use our space as a testing ground, to show experimental works that would otherwise go unseen. We have screened video art, music videos, classic short films, experimental documentaries, pieces that are too abstract or too non-linear, that can't or won't be shown in most other spaces.

In 2019 F(r)ictions held our launch event at The Flying Dutchman, ultimately moving to DIY Space for London for two further screenings which were wheelchair accessible with donation-based ticketing. We screened artists such as Adam Farah, Sopo Ramischwili, Sarah Ibrahim, Edmund Hardy, Indrani Ashe, Sade Mica, Erin Liu, Sarah Gaafar, Deborah Findlater and Jamie Jankovic. During the pandemic we moved online, hosting our first digital screening in collaboration with Camden Art Centre, showing works by April Lin, Sam Lanchin, Rehana Zaman, Flo Low, Summer M, Morisha Moodley, Nicky Chue, Katerina Mimikou, Joanne Lee. We hosted our second online event, centred around themes of poetry, with The 87 Press, with works by Samra Mayanja and Sarah Gaafar. In 2021 we hosted our Summer Programme as part of our new website launch, which was free for viewers and included films by Lika Tarkhan-Mouravi, Zlata Onufieva, Onyeka Igwe, Soohyun Choi and more.

In 2022 F(r)ictions curated a selection in collaboration with T A P E collective for London Short Film Festival, showcasing films by Maryam Tafakory, Michal Bolland, Samra Mayanja, Anuka Ramischwili-Schaefer and Edmund Hardy. In the summer we brought a film installation to Camden Art Centre as part of The 87 Press Long Song for Summer Poetry Festival.

In 2023 we seek to hold a series of screenings at local Tbilisi venues. In particular, we would like to create a cultural exchange, where we select local experimental filmmakers to screen alongside international short film.

We are extremely grateful for any and all amounts. Share and spread the word! THANK YOU.
