Freedom Summer & Beyond: A Commemoration

I am creating this page for my mother, Doratha 'Dodie' Smith-Simmons. She is a former member of New Orleans Congress Of Racial Equality (CORE). They played a major part in the Civil Rights Movement but are often left out. This year is the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_Summer) and there will be a conference in New Orleans to commemorate this event. Below you will find her letter asking for your donations to help cover the costs of this conference. Any contributions will help.

Fifty years after the Freedom Summer Projects throughout Louisiana and the formation of the first chapter of the Deacons for Defense and Justice in Jonesboro, 51 years of the unbridled repression of civil rights activism in Plaquemine, LA almost took the life of James Farmer and others, and 53 years after a group of young people from New Orleans joined the Freedom Rides and trained others in non-violence, clearly some progress has been made and just as clearly, many problems remain.
This conference, organized by a group of former CORE workers, The Louisiana CORE Legacy Committee, is partly a reunion of kindred spirits, partly a commemoration of the accomplishments of 60's activism and most importantly, an examination of what is still to be done in Louisiana and in the nation.
As a member of the Louisiana CORE Legacy Committee, I am asking those of you who believe in freedom and equality, to help by making a donation. These donations will be used to defray the cost of venues, transportation, video recording, food and registration supplies.The dates for the conference are June 21-23, 2014.
