Carlos is 22, a husband and father. Balmoris is 41, father of one son murdered by gangs in El Salvador and another who is still alive. Both men came here to support their families.
Now, they’ve been locked in immigration jails for months because they can’t afford bail. With your support, they can be free.
Trump insists that millions of immigrants must be rounded up (building on a the skyrocketing detentions and deportations from the Obama administration). Some 35,000 are locked in cells and surrounded by razor wire on any given day in America. Carlos, Balmoris and hundreds like them are actually “lucky” because immigration judges ruled they represent no danger, aren’t flight risks and deserve to be free on bail — $1,500 for Carlos and $4,000 for Balmoris. But like most jailed immigrants, raising that much money is impossible. The bail is like a life sentence.
As ICE makes more and more arrests, the New Sanctuary Coalition L.I.F.E. Bond Fund faces an emergency. We need you to replenish the bond fund with your donations now. Every day’s delay means Carlos, Balmoris and many more will spend another day behind bars, separated from friends, family and legal support.
Our well-established fund has freed 22 men, women and children in the past year. Immigrants are being jailed indiscriminately even though nearly 7 of 10 granted bail are ultimately ruled not to be deportable. With arrests rising, our bond fund, which began with more than $100,000, is nearly exhausted and urgently needs donations.
Let’s make sure Balmoris is freed before March 31, the one-year mark in his needless incarceration. Let’s make sure the NSC L.I.F.E. (Live in Faith Everyday) Bond Fund has money to bail out as many people as possible. It is our duty to stand with our siblings as they fight for their freedom.
