“It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones.” -Nelson Mandela.
We are a group of students raising money for legal counsel to help Bryant Murphy, an incarcerated man inside Southern Ohio Correctional Facility who knows this nation and its injustices better than anyone. Bryant is an activist, educator, and poet. He is passionate about family, the environment, fitness and nutrition, and he hopes to share his knowledge through TedTalks when he is released. Bryant was convicted over 15 years ago by a jury not of his peers and he did not receive proper counsel at the time of his trial. In his time in prison, he has been subject to solitary confinement for over a decade and various forms of abuse and torture at the hands of the prison. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, things have only worsened; he lost his father July 22nd, 2020 due to COVID-19 complications resulting from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Bryant himself has asthma, putting him at high risk for contracting the virus. The facility has had several COVID-19 outbreaks but is not taking proper safety precautions to protect Bryant and the other prisoners. As students passionate about fighting mass incarceration and friends of Bryant, we are asking for your help to get him released from these horrible conditions and reunited with his family. All funds raised will go to attorneys who will viciously pursue post-conviction remedies to liberate Bryant and return him to his community as an inspirational force for human rights. As the great Fannie Lou Hamer said, “Nobody’s free until everybody’s free”.
