Update! Kristi's Mother has asked us to add our dear Coach, Doug Paulsen, who died from a fierce battle with kidney cancer, to this memorial bench fundraiser.
The Cause! The teammates, families and friends of Columbia Roofing Softball are raising money to sponsor a memorial bench, maintained by Vancouver Parks and Recreation, but placed permanently at the entrance of Vancouver Girls Softball Association Sports Complex where Kristi spent her childhood playing fastpitch softball. She was coached by Doug Paulsen, for 10 years who passed away one year to the date ahead of Kristi.
Coach Doug's Story-
Douglas Paulsen was born November 20, 1940 in Austin, MN. He was the oldest of 7 children. Doug battled kidney cancer for 3 and 1/2 years and fought a courageous fight. He was married to Dorothy for 49 years. He started out farming in Minnesota but moved to the Pacific Northwest in '71 and settled in their Hazel Dell home for 34 years. Doug worked for Northwest Natural Gas as a crew leader. He enjoyed the outdoors and loved spending time at any sporting event.
He was coach for Columbia Roofing softball team for 10 years. His demeanor was calm and was a teacher of the game. He coached the individual player as well as the TEAM. He helped build a softball family for a lifetime. He was able, at the very end of his life, to attend Vancouver Girls Softball Associations's 50th Reunion and be a part of this important ceremony to commemorate the important impact VGSA has made on countless girls in our Vancouver community for more than 50 years. He was a huge part of VGSA's success and he is truly missed.
Kristi's Story-
On August 28, 2014, we were all shocked to learn that Kristi Osborn-Cook, 40, passed away unexpectedly from a blockage to her heart.
Kristi loved playing fast pitch softball throughout her life. She was an amazing player and a loyal teammate. Our Columbia Roofing Team was blessed to have played together for nine years. We won State and Regional Championships and played in two National Tournaments. Kristi was very important to our success not only because she was a great player but because she was such wonderful person. Spirituality was very important to Kristi and she loved Jesus and was devoted to Him throughout her childhood and into her adult life.
Kristi was born to Lewis & Marilyn (Madsen) Osborn on October 21, 1973 in Freemont, CA. Kristi graduated valedictorian at Battleground High School, and went on to graduate with Bachelor’s degrees in Psychology & Sociology from Willamette University. On September 26, 2009, she married Marty Cook at the First Congregational Church. Kristi was the Manager of Admitting and Registration of Walla Walla General Hospital. She had just celebrated 10 years at Walla Walla General Hospital and received the Outstanding Service Pin.
Help us keep Kristi and Doug's memory's alive as we and future softball players are reminded of their wonderful lives as we rest on a beautiful bench. Thank you for your gift.
