Xavier Powell is fighting a very rare and aggresive type of cancer called Renal Medullary Carcinoma. It has metastisized to his lungs, lymph nodes, and bones, putting him in stage 4. Only 120 people have suffered from this type of cancer up to 2009. Below you will find the story of when his difficult journey began, as well as several updates along the way on his progress. Xavier is our 15 yr. old son who's story has touched the hearts and lives of so many people. We feel so fortunate for all of the prayers, support and help from friends, family and even strangers! We have received texts and phone calls from all over asking us where people can go to donate and what they can do to help Xavier. This page was set up to help offset the cost of hotels, gas, and most importantly his mother's loss of income while she stays home to help Xavier make a full recovery.
On Wednesday December 31st, Xavier went to see the doctor for a persistent cough he had for 2 weeks. He had a chest x-ray that showed he may have pneumonia and was given some medication. A week later his symptoms were still present and he began to feel weak, so he was taken in to the doctor for a follow-up. They did another chest x-ray which showed no change from the week prior. Tests for the flu, TB, and strept throat were done. While awaiting these results he began throwing up and went to back to the doctor where he was admitted. Another chest x-ray was done, which promopted a chest CT. That moment our lives would be forever changed. The results showed a large right renal mass that had metastisized to his lungs. Unable to provide the level of care needed, he was discharged from Baptist Hospital in Montgomery AL and admitted to Children's Hospital in Birmingham AL. He had a brain CT that night to investigate some headaches he was having. The following day he had an abdominal/pelvic CT. He was brought to the OR for a lung biopsy. While under anesthesia he also had a chest tube and chemotherapy port was placed. Friday, January 16th Xavier was discharged and is scheduled to have a right nephrectomy (surgical removal of a kidney) on Tuesday, January 20th and will be in the hospital for at least a week. We will also find out the pathology report so we know exactly what kind of cancer we are dealing with. Afterwards we will be traveling back and forth from home to the Children's Hospital to receive his chemo treatments.
This past week has been an exceptionally challenging week for our family. We dont know what the future holds, but we know God is with us and watching over Xavier every step of the way. Thank you for all your prayers and support. There are no words to describe our gratitude!
