Jaquayla Young was a member of the Teaching and Learning Institute's class of 2019. The Teaching and Learning Institute is a high school magnet program for students interested in pursuing careers in education and leadership. When Jaquayla graduated, written on the top of her mortar board, were the words, "Educated black queen with a dream." She truly embodied the core values of our program. Jaquayla was an academic all star, a talented athlete and truly the leader of the pack. At our annual TLI End of Year Celebration, she was awarded MVP of her class. On September 19th, 2020, Jaquayla was tragically murdered.
I’m honestly not sure how much I taught Jaquayla during her 4 years in the TLI program, but I can tell you that I learned a great deal from her. She taught me what it means to be truly loyal. She always had her friends back. Her devotion to them never wavered. Jaquayla taught me about justice as she was never afraid to speak up when she believed something was wrong or that someone was treated poorly. And Jaquayla taught me what it means to be tenacious and driven, as she never lost sight of her goals. Most of all, I learned from her how to have fun and live joyfully. She was always the first one at our TLI celebrations and typically the last to leave; truly the life of the party.
Though her last name may have been Young, she left a lasting legacy well beyond her years. We want her memory to live on, and for future TLI students to know of the amazing lessons we were fortunate to learn from Jaquayla. We are setting up a scholarship fund in her name, so that each year we can recognize another, "Educated black queen with a dream."
This is the 25th year of the TLI program. Your willingness to give and share this fundraiser will help future scholars like Jaquayla realize their goals of attending college and furthering their education, dreams that Jaquayla was tragically denied. We thank you in advance for your support.
Sincerely,
Laura and Dan Delehanty & The TLI Family
