"Lift of Love" for Duane Hale

Duane Hale has been a resident of Lindale since he was two years old. He is now 49 years old. Duane was diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atropy Type III when he was around 4 years old. He did not let this stop him and was determined to live as normal of a life as any other person.
He graduated from Lindale High School in 1983 and for the next 19 years worked for the City of Lindale as a 911 dispatcher. In 2004, his disability became a factor at work as he was worried he would not react to a 911 call fast enough, so he retired.
Duane's current mode of transportation is a 1995 Ford Van that continues to break down and is unreliable. His wife traded in her car for a new van but they can not afford a new lift. They rely soley on his wifes income and she makes just above the income level for them to qualify for SSI, Disability or Medicaid. Since they do not qualify for these, they also do not qualify for DARS, DADS or MDA benefits.
The most important thing to Duane is being able to participate in his 15 year old son's activities, which include band, baseball and FFA. At this time, he is not able to see all of these activities because of the problems with his van.
They are in desperate need of getting a lift for the new van and a push wheelchair so that Duane can have a better quality of life.
Lonestar Handicap Vans in Tyler, Texas provides a conversion for the van that will meet Duane's needs. The cost of the conversion alone is $15,000. This conversion will allow Duane to sit in the passenger seat and provide a manual lift for him to get in and out of the van. Any extra monies will be applied towards the cost of the new van or any other expenses that may occur. All donations will be 100% tax deductible.
