Fly High: The Story of Matt Billon

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Kim Billon- we have a very special thing happening here, and it’s time to get the close people to Matt Billon involved!

November 25, 2021 was the worst day of my life, as it was for many, many of you and others. We lost my brother, your friend- perhaps your best friend- and beloved Canadian comedian Matt Billon. In the last year and a half, we have been working on keeping his memory and his passion for helping people alive, by starting a foundation in his name (The Billon Foundation), through which we have and will continue to help performing artists struggling with mental health and addictions. We have also started to work on producing a very special documentary about the incredible- almost unbelievable at times, and often heartbreaking- story of Matt Billon, with one of Matt’s best friends, the exceedingly talented filmmaker Nathan Beninger.

The World-Famous Comedy Store in LA announced in March of this year that Matt Billon’s name will be going up on the wall this summer- something Matt strived to achieve when he worked at the Store as a door guy in 2017-2018- a dream almost every comedian has. He was told he was close to being passed as a paid regular when he left LA to escape what had become too much for him there.

Matt Billon’s name in the comedy community is not only mentioned when speaking of talented comedians, but also when talking about exceptional humans- countless stories of how Matt mentored or was just kind to so many new and seasoned comedians; the coolest dude in the room. The honour of the Comedy Store is an amazing tribute to our very loved and missed Best Friend.

This full-length documentary (currently named ‘Fly High’ - Matt signed his name with this caption) will be years in the making, and we need your help to get it off the ground. We know there are so many worthy causes out there- that is why we are reaching out to those who knew and love Matt, those whose lives may have been impacted by his generosity, love, and compassion- to be part of this very worthwhile project in sharing Matt’s story with the world, through the eyes and lens of those who were most touched by Matt Billon.

Names Night is a big deal at the Comedy Store. We are so blessed that this is happening for Matt- a true honour- and we are raising funds for travel expenses and related costs for Nathan and a small film crew to film the event as part of the documentary.

We need your help to make this first step happen! We will include every single donor’s name in the credits of the documentary- a project of love and connection. We hope we can count on your support, as well as your involvement and input as the documentary builds, and can’t wait to make this dream of Matt’s a part of this important project.

Thank you for your time in reading this, and if you want to get involved or discuss further with myself or Nathan, please reach out! We will provide updates as steps are made.

Much love – fly high!
