My name is Jenice Benedict and I am organizing a ‘GO FUND ME’ page in honor of an amazing, sweet, happy 3-year-old boy Cashel Wurzbach who is fighting high-risk neuroblastoma cancer for over a year, and also for his parents who were flooded out of their Houston home during the category 4 hurricane, August 2017.
Over a year ago on May 31, 2016, Eric and Alita Wurzbach's son Cashel was diagnosed with stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma at the tender age of 21 months. This type of cancer has roughly 700 new cases each year in the United States and it is an aggressive growing cancer. The cancer started in Cashel's adrenal glands and spread to his lymph nodes, his liver, bone marrow, and then a tumor in his abdomen with several smaller tumors.
In less than a week after coming into the ER, Cashel started his first round of chemotherapy and faced many more rounds of chemo, hospital visits, and treatments. On Oct.14th he had an operation to remove the tumors in his stomach area. The operation lasted for over 17 hours and the doctors could not remove all the cancer in his abdomen.
When Cashel was well enough between his chemo and radiation therapy, he underwent two painful bone marrow harvestings and tandem stem cell transplants. He has been in isolation many times throughout. He relapsed in June 2017 and has undergone radioactive treatments. The treatment path going forward is unknown. There are no treatment standards for relapsed Neuroblastoma, and from now on the treatment will be experimental.
Two months after Cashel relapsed Hurricane Harvey appeared on the Texas coastline. Within days, Houston received over 40 inches of rain and water started coming into the Wurzbach's house and everyone's house on their street at 4:00AM. Cashel's father Eric went to all the houses around him to wake his neighbors up so they could get their families to safety. One family took in 24 people, and that is where Cashel's parents stayed for a while, then they went to live at Cashel's grandparent's house in Houston because Eric and his family lost everything in the flood in Houston. ( ie.-3 ft. of water in their house for days losing all their furnishings, the two cars, clothes, shoes, appliances, all the pictures, toys, and their treasures are gone.)
The adjuster from FEMA has seen the Wurzbach's house but he cannot give a report for at least 3 months because now the adjusters are all over in Florida. The family did have flood insurance but it will take a while for FEMA to pay. Meanwhile, two men at Dynegy (where Eric works) gave him 2 cars to use so they could get to work and to the hospital with Cashel. The family can use the cars until they can purchase some new ones.
Cashel's parents do not know when they will get into an apartment and they are not sure what they are going to do with their house that flooded. Meanwhile, they are trying to get Cashel in and out of the hospital, begin their five-year-old son in Kindergarten class, buy new clothes & shoes, and other necessities, and then figure out what to do while Cashel is under medical treatments.
In summary, Cashel's diagnosis and the Wurzbach house flooding has changed this family's lives, and they have learned in the hardest way how quickly one's life can spiral into unknown territory. The parents are trying to stay positive and to live in the moment that God has given them with their children.
As a friend of Cashel's grandmother, I am asking that you please keep this sweet little boy and family in your thoughts and prayers... and perhaps, this is a perfect time that WE CAN BE the nurturing hands of our Lord and help the Wurzbach Family by giving a $$ donation via 'FLOOD YOUR LOVE FOR CASHEL.'
Any donation amount you can spare will help offset the family’s living expenses, ancillary medical costs, food eaten when at the hospital, gasoline, hospital parking fees, clothes, toys for Cashel while in the hospital, and other expenses resulting from Cashel’s illness and the horrible hurricane flood.
If there is any money left over after the Wurzbachs get on their feet, they will donated it to 'Alex's Lemonade Stand' fundraiser, or to another childhood cancer charity.
