My husband’s name is Flávio, 37 years old and was diagnosed with cancer on 10/08/2020.
We currently live in Sydney as students with limited access to free medical, and with the current circumstances of COVID 19 in Brazil, it is not possible for us to return back to Brazil to commence treatment there.
So we have chosen to stay in Sydney to receive the best medical cancer treatment and care.
The cancer was discovered through a routine chest examination, therefore, a battery of tests was requested, where some tumours were found around the neck and in the thyroid, after all exams and biopsy were completed, he was diagnosed with “THYROID PAPILLARY CARCINOMA” (thyroid cancer).
This is the most common type of thyroid cancer, but in the case of Flávio, it has proven to be quite aggressive and rare, as it has spread to his Lymph nodes in his neck and down to his chest. We were also advised that the PET scan showed signs of cancer in his lower spine.
The doctor advised that this is not at all common for this type of cancer, it is a 1 in 1 million occurrence in people, according to the doctor, something very rare and unusual.
Flavio is booked in for surgery in September which will be a 10 hour long procedure, where the surgeons will remove all visible tumours, the surgery is in a "Y" shape where they will make a incision from one side of the neck to the other side then make a connecting incision down to his sternum (chest) .
We were advised that this surgery comes with multiple risks due to the nature of the surgery and how aggressive this cancer has been.
We were advised that they will do all possible to mitigate damage to nerves that control the voice, arm movement, calcium production, among other possible complications and issues.
However we are very hopeful in the name of Jesus, that God will work through every doctor and help my husband recover.
After the surgery he will undergo a radiotherapy treatment, that should kill the lingering cancer cells and kill the cancer cells that have lodged in his lower spine.
All this treatment will be very expensive, our student health insurance will cover part, but Flávio without working and I’m working less now, so that I can take care of him and our 10 year old son, it will be very difficult to cover all costs, so I come to you via GO FUND ME and seek your help from friends, relatives, religious groups, and anyone that can help us through this most difficult time in our lives.
We thank you all from the bottom of my heart and may God bless you.
