On June 21, 2018 I went in for open heart surgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Ga. I have had a history congenital heart defects from a young age. The surgery was supposed to a simple aortic valve replacement, but it wound up being anything but normal. I had the procedure done and everything went well. Four days later and two different types of imaging the cardiologist came in and said the valve is not functioning properly and that I was going to need a second aortic valve replacement. I had the second surgery on July 2, 2018 and they were able to place a valve that worked properly and I was released from the hospital on July 8, 2018.
This was just the start of our crazy summer. Back in April my dad, Jeffrey Flake, was diagnosed with an acustic neuroma; which is a beniegn brain tumor between the inner ear and the brain stem. While I was in the hospital with my surgery my dad met with the neurosurgeon and it was decided that the tumor needed to be removed. So they scheduled surgery for what was suppose to be an in and out of the hospital procedure. Well again it has been anything but that. The surgery was performed on Thursday, July 19, 2018, and the following day he suffered at stroke to the left cerebellum. The stroke caused pressure to build on the brain and they had to perform emergency surgery to remove a portion of the scull to allow the pressure to ease. The following week he contracted pseudomonas that had caused sepsis to set in. He spent over a week in the ICU on ventilator for this. They were finally able to removed the breathing tube and get him to a regular room on the floor. They decided on August 3, 2018 to send him to acute therapy at Emory. While there he began running a fever and on August 8, 2018 they took him to the emergency room to do a lumbar tap and find out that he had meningitis. He is now back in the ICU and on the ventilator again. It has been determined that he has Klebsiella which was the cause of the meningitis and allowed sepsis to set back in. The doctors have said that the next 48 hrs will be real key to see how his body responds because this strain of bacteria sometimes does not respond to antibiotics well. Through both of my surgeries and all of my dads sickness my mom has stood strong and by both of our sides. My dad still has a long ways to go to recover and will require extensive therapy once he is better.
