Gide Colinet was born April 16, 1939 in Jacmel, Haiti. He completed his primary and secondary education in Jacmel and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In 1966, he left Haiti and moved to America. He married the love of his life in 1969 and eventually made Chicago his home. They had three children.
Gide completed graduate school in the United States becoming a Professor of Chemistry. His greatest passion was teaching. He worked long hours teaching, tutoring and mentoring students. His hand-written exams consisted of 18 pages of short answer questions with limited multiple choice questions. He pushed students to work hard in their classes and in life. His philosophy was “Everyone has the potential and capacity to learn. You just have to find the right method to teach them.” He taught thousands of students over 33 years, before he retired in 2012. Gide worked with many organizations, one in particular, the Chicago Area Health & Medical Careers Program (CAHMCP) that prepares students to gain acceptance into medical and pharmacy schools.
Haiti was always near and dear to Gide’s heart. His passion was to find a way to give back and help Haiti. He partnered with an organization, HERO, to assist those who suffered from the great earthquake that devastated Haiti in 2010. He hosted a group of volunteers in his home during their trip to Haiti. This group of volunteers hand-delivered medical supplies and food to various hospitals, clinics, schools and churches.
In 2014, Gide founded and funded the Jacmel Institute of Science and Technology (JIST) to educate and train young people in science, mathematics, critical thinking, etc. He taught various chemistry courses and hired teachers to teach the other required courses. Gide used his own resources to finance the school. He paid the teachers from his own expenses every month. Gide was in the process of applying for 501(c)(3) status for financial assistance and expansion. However, on Saturday, March 24, 2018, Gide passed away suddenly in Jacmel, Haiti. The JIST students were his adopted children. He believed these young people could have a great impact in changing Haiti. Gide was proud of their work and he loved them. We believe his work is not yet finished. We want to continue supporting the Jacmel Institute of Science and Technology. This will honor Gide and his lifelong passion.
