Thank you to everyone that has taken the time to stop by this page and read it and thank you for considering donating even if you don't.

I'm sure that most of you don't know Kara personally and probably have never even heard her name. Well, I suppose that I am one of the fortunate ones. I have had the pleasure of knowing this kind and compassionate lady for the past few years and am very grateful to have her in my life and especially as my friend.  I would like to take this opportunity to share a small portion of her story with you.

Kara 34 years old and a single mother of two school aged children.  This tiny family of 3 lives just outside of the Richmond, VA area. Kara moved here from Fredericksburg and had been taking college classes to satisfy her prerequisites so that she could eventually enter a nursing program. She also has been working as a registration clerk at a local Richmond hospital for the past 4.5 years.

Trying to raise 2 small children on a single income and taking college classes hasn’t been an easy task and is very slow moving. Each of us know that obstacles and life happen and we deal with issues as they arise. Kara has had many obstacles arise but no matter what the situation has been Kara has always placed her family first. Despite the many setbacks, she has never become discouraged and continues to trek on.

Recently she was hospitalized for an unusual headache, staggering, slurred speech and a blood pressure that became elevated when she stands. Initially she was diagnosed with an atypical migraine and discharged to home. A few days later all the symptoms worsened. Kara was admitted to the hospital again, this time she had a more involved work-up involving cardiology and neurological testing which required her to stay as an inpatient for 5 days. The neurologists tried a few combinations of medications that lowered her blood pressure and helped with the headaches. Because she was showing improvement to the new medications she was discharged to home.  She was ordered to rest while at home. She tried to remain lying down as that was the only way to keep her blood pressure down and help with the headache. 1 day after her last discharge she lost most of the strength on one side of her body, developed facial droop and couldn’t walk. She arrived at the ER and again was admitted for a 3rd time. This time the MRI showed blood clots in her brain. The doctors soon realized that she was having a rare kind of stroke. The type of stroke is called a Cerebral Venous Sinus Thrombosis (CVST). Only 5 people out of 1,000,000 have this type of stroke. With Kara, the cause for this stroke is unknown. She is currently receiving treatment from local neurologists and is stable. She is showing some improvement but progression is slow. Kara has already been out of work for the past two weeks and specialists are saying that it will be at least 6 more weeks before they can decide to release her to work again.

Kara has been a compliant patient and for such a little patient, Kara is a BIG fighter. While Kara was pregnant with her first child she learned that she had Cervical Cancer AND Uterine Cancer. I couldn’t imagine receiving that diagnosis while being pregnant! Kara found the strength and carried the pregnancy to term and delivered a healthy baby girl. Just after delivery Kara had surgery to remove the malignancy and then endured chemotherapy treatments to rid her body of any remaining malignant cells. The surgery and chemotherapy were a success and for the past 13 years, Kara has been cancer free!

Knowing that Kara is a fighter, there is no doubt in my mind that Kara will get through this.  Getting through the next 6 weeks without her regular income will be difficult for her and her children. Although Kara has insurance to help with medical bills, it won’t pay for rent, utilities and groceries. For that reason, I have decided to set up this gofundme account to assist her where she needs it.
