The life of any gathering, one conversation with Sanjiv and the smile on your face and laughter are guaranteed. Sanjiv is a doting father, a loving son and absolutely adoring husband. Dependable, sincere and never shy of lending a helping hand, is what colleagues and friends would say of him
His life came to a standstill when what started as unexplained fever was diagnosed to be Blood Cancer. This year, in May 2020, Sanjiv was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia B- cell. This was absolutely unexpected as there is no family history and he lived a healthy life all through. He is in the high risk category of B-ALL Leukemia since the mutation of his cancer cells is such that the cure was Chemotherapy followed by Stem cell transplant.
He started with his induction Chemotherapy, however he got another infection while he was immunocompromised- a rare form of fungal infection - Trichosporon Asahii. His hospital stay was over 2 months getting stable on both cancer and fungal infection front. Another round of intensive chemotherapy was given post which his infection became worse. He was put on dual anti fungal therapy. His Chemotherapy had to be put on hold to give some time for the fungal infection to be healed. It didn’t take much time for the cancer to come back and this time along with his blood, it showed up on his skin as leukemia deposits.
His condition worsened with leukemia in blood, leukemia in skin, and fungal infection in body.
That’s when he was referred to get his treatment done in Houston, USA. Treatment is possible but prohibitively expensive. Sanjiv along with his wife, Prerna and son, Abeer, 11 year old have shifted to USA from India for treatment. The cancer had become too complicated and hence with all hope they have started the treatment now. His treatment would be Chemotherapy followed by Stem cell transplant.
