FIGHT: Lise Fights Cancer

In mid-December 2019, our dear friend and teacher, Lise van Boxel, was diagnosed with stage IV, metastasized lung cancer (non-small cell adenocarcinoma).  This diagnosis came after a series of medical tests, scans, biopsies and consultations with numerous doctors. She learned that the cancer began in her lungs and spread to other parts of her body. Today, Lise began radiation therapy. In a few weeks, she will begin chemotherapy to fight the cancer. And fight she will.

We want to support her in the fight to come.  We want to ensure that she has the very best information and treatment options available to her.  We want her to know that she is not alone. Show your support by donating to lighten her financial burden.

During the fight with cancer, positivity can be life saving. Consider writing a letter to Lise, sharing poetry or music, sending a photo, or making a recording of your favorite text or memorable moment with Lise. We ask that you direct your thoughts or questions to Charles Pisaruk.  He is in regular contact with her and will relay your messages (audio recordings, letters, art, etc) as her condition permits. He can be reached at

Lise has spent the last two decades teaching the Great Books at St. John’s College.  In those twenty years, she has had a lasting influence on countless students, living out the principle in speech and action that the examined life is worth living.  As a teacher, she has led her students across four thousand years of human thought, from the Hebrew Bible and the Illiad to Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity. Over the course of two decades, she has been a powerful presence on both St. Johns’ campuses, inspiring students to embody the virtues discussed in the classroom and challenging them to live their best lives. Lise is one of those rare humans whose spirited intellect is matched only by her genuine empathy.

Outside of the classroom, Lise has been an advocate for the armed forces on and off campus.  Since 2017, she has co-hosted a regular podcast and a seminar series that encourages service members and veterans alike to reflect on their experiences through the Great Books.  She was motivated, in her own words, by the idea that, “there are men and women sacrificing themselves for our liberty--and they ought to know what this means and why this is a noble calling.”

Thanks in advance for your support -

Charles and Ben
