"Don't count yourselves out. ANY team can win ANY game on ANY given day." That's what my mom would tell us in the locker room as we geared up to play a particularly hard team. We knew we were the underdogs, but we'd put on our uniforms and lace up our shoes -- ready to battle. Mom was right there with us; guiding us with a plan; lifting our spirits when we were down; teaching us what to do when we were lost; encouraging our strengths; and reminding us to never give up. Sometimes we'd leave the court exhausted, weak, and defeated. Other times --even when the odds were stacked against us-- we'd pour our heart into the game, band together as a team, and leave the court victorious. Mom was right. No matter how hard the battle appears to be, anything is possible with the right people and the right plan at the right time.
On August 13, our mom transitioned from coach to player in the biggest battle of her life. She unexpectedly joined a team of approximately 266,000 other women diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Some may say they're the underdogs because the opponent is cruel, relentless, forceful, intense, and unpredictable....but we're taking a page out of my mom's playbook. #Hope. #Fight. #Win. Game on, cancer --this is God's court.
Unfortunately, mom's cancer was advanced by the time it was caught and identified. She was diagnosed with two different types of breast cancer in both breasts, putting her at Stage 3C bilateral breast cancer. Because of the advancement, her treatments are also advanced, which include chemotherapy, a double mastectomy, and extensive radiation.
We don't usually ask much from anyone, but for our amazing mother who has loved, guided, motivated and supported so many people in her lifetime, we will. Mom has went through countless treatments of chemotherapy for the last 5 months, in which she has had to commute 2 hours back and forth from the hospital several times a month. She has also paid for certain medications a few times during her chemotherapy treatments, which added up to $1,200 of out of pocket costs.
Between the costs for medication, gas, food, and recovery supplies, financial demands during this journey have added up, and she isn't finished yet. The most costs will be coming up in the near future as she goes from chemotherapy treatments to radiation treatments. She will need to undergo 66 radiation therapy treatments, in which she will be enduring the 2 hour a day commute for 5 days a week in a total of roughly 13 weeks! So needless to say, the bulk of the out of pocket costs are yet to come. As much as we hate to ask, we are asking for any amount of donations you would be willing to give. Whether its 5 cents or 5 dollars, any amount greatly helps and would be extremely appreciated! From our family to yours, we give all of our gratitude for standing in this battle with us and being a special blessing on our journey. We are standing together, hand in hand, beating cancer's butt!
