Fiasco Art Center Black Muralist Initiative
After the completion of the collaborative Black Lives Matter mural on a riverfront trail under the Fort Duquesne Bridge , it came to our attention that these efforts to highlight black artists and voices needed to continue.
Since then, a collective of local muralists working alongside black artists have identified four prominent locations to feature the talents of local black artists in the form of muralism.
This GoFundMe campaign is meant to support the material costs of a mural production and spray paint workshops at Fiasco Art Center, in the Observatory Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. There will be 1 official mural wall curated by Camo Nesbit, Devaughn Rodgers, and other local black artists. A second wall will be used as a practice/workshop space to allow local black artists to learn the mediums of spray paint and muralism, before adding their designs to the official mural wall.
The workshops and mural creation will span an entire weekend. The date of this will be decided once we have started to receive funding and when we have decided the official artist roster. However, we would for this to happen mid-late July. This mural and workshop is meant to be an opportunity for artists to experiment, learn the craft, and apply their artistic skills to a medium that is primarily dominated by white artists in Pittsburgh.
Any extra funding received will go towards the black artists involved in the form of stipends for their work and involvement.
For the artists involved, this can be a critical starting point to the beginning of a mural career, so we wish to provide a platform that can properly propel their art careers in the right direction.
The Organizing/Workshop Instructor team for this project includes:
Camo Nesbit, Devaughn Rodgers, Naomi Chambers, Jerome 'Chu' Charles, Max 'Gems' Gonzales, Brian Gonnella, Caitlin Bruce and Shane Pilster
