Medical bills and equipment

July 6th, 2022, my family experienced a nightmare but in real life. This could happen to anyone traveling abroad.

On July 4th, we left Texas on a Carnival cruise for a family vacation to Cozumel, Mexico. Two days into the trip, on July 6th, my parents were in a motor scooter accident that left them with several severe injuries.

While at the hospital in Mexico, we were treated unbelievably poorly and forced to pay a substantial amount of money before we were considered patients. When I walked into the Emergency room, I saw my parents on a stretcher untreated, bleeding, with obvious bone deformities showing broken bones, and my mother hardly conscious. By profession, I am a Nurse and immediately went into "nurse mode" and started questioning if anything had been done to begin treating my parents. My brother, a military medic, and I immediately put our knowledge to use by directing the emergency staff on what to do. I was floored at their lack of response to such traumatic events and that I had to use my skills to treat my parents at a medical facility. The staff was clueless about how to treat and care for our parents (or they didn't care). After what seemed to be an entire shift in the E.R for me, in less than 24 hours, my brother and I had to book my parents an emergency care flight from Mexico back to Houston, Texas, to treat their injuries. There was no way we were leaving them behind to be treated by such unconcerned, clueless medical workers.

While in Mexico, we paid the hospital over $50,000, in cash, for their medical bills (even though they had insurance), plus our flight back to the states, nearly emptying both my brother and I savings. My dad has officially been released with multiple fractures that are non-operable and is doing okay. On the other hand, my mother is still in a trauma unit and has undergone 1 of 2 surgeries for her injuries. She has sustained a clavicle fracture, 5 rib fractures, a fracture to her arm and a very bad fracture to her leg. They both have pretty bad road rash. We are asking for donations to help us continue caring for our parents through their healing journey. We are forever grateful for everyone’s prayers and love; please keep them coming because it keeps us going! These events have caused a significant setback and will be a long road to recovery for them, but we’re thankful that God intervened & our parents are still here with us! We love you all & thank you for any donations you feel led to give! ❤️
