Fernanda's Legacy campaign

"If I had to get sick so that you could know God, it was worth it!"

These are the brave and valiant words my dear friend shares with her fellow chemo patients.

Fernanda, age 29, was diagnosed with stage four thymus cancer earlier this year.

According to the emergency room doctor the night she was hospitalized she should have died before coming in because of thrombosis (blood clots) that were caused by the 4 x 3 in tumor that was pressing on her heart. That night they had no idea what was going on with her body, the mass in her chest was so big that they couldn't distinguish where it was coming from. Their goal was to keep her from getting another clot and keeping her out of as much pain as possible.

What was one night turned into days, and then weeks of not really understanding what was going on in her body.  After being hospitalized for 35 days she was discharged with stage 4 thymus cancer. A very rare cancer, so rare that the Chilean Government Health Coverage does not cover treatment.

Let me pause for a moment to explain how social health works down here in Chile. Here there is Public and Private health care. Public health care is "accessible" to everyone who qualifies for it, and Private is for those who can afford it.  Fernanda, and her husband Felipe, are full time missionaries and do not receive salary for their work here at YWAM (like all YWAMers). Since they do not have a steady monthly income they qualify for free public healthcare.

Unfortunately,  the health care coverage is selective at what treatments/ illnesses they cover and Thymus cancer treatment is NOT covered and they have had to come up with the money out of pocket for all of her Chemotherapy. All treatments that are out of pocket must be paid for BEFORE they are administered.

Fernanda her husband Felipe and their 4 year old son, Matias, had to move in with her parents in a different city 3 hours away from the YWAM base to seek proper care, because Pichilemu doesn't offer chemotherapy. This situation has been especially challenging for their family because only a few months before Fernanda's diagnosis her father lost his job (and her mom is a homemaker) so they have not been able to be of much financial help.

God has provided $ for every one of her chemo treatments.  Yet, they are still waiting for provision for the rest of her treatment.

In the next month she needs about $5500 to continue to pay out of pocket for the next part of her treatments which include a PET scan, various other exams that are not covered and possibly even a surgery to remove the mass (* if deemed operable).

Since she will be paying for these things out of pocket she is required to pay for them BEFORE they can take place.

She is also struggling from a secondary condition of thrombosis, which has her on blood thinners because she is at risk of a blood clot- so she will have to continue to treat this for at least 6 months after her cancer is treated which is a heavy weight to carry.

This page is specifically dedicated to help supply the financial needs of her treatment and her family and alleviate the financial burden cancer causes, on top of everything else.  If God has put it on your heart to help this family please donate NOW!

Please remember this family in your prayers. It has been an uphill battle and there are days that are harder than others. But Fernanda's words express her belief in that God can work together all things for good for those who love Him. All things... even cancer.
