Feed the Picket Line & Support Local Business

Feed Striking Graduate Workers at Columbia by Supporting Local Business 

Graduate Workers of Columbia UAW-2110, a union of teaching and research assistants at Columbia University, are on strike for a fair first contract. This means they are walking the picket line: the picketers are out in the cold for long hours each day, in need of warmth and nourishment. 

As rank-and-file workers, we are teaming up with family-owned local businesses in our neighborhood to bring hot lunches to the picketers.  Subsconscious is a family-owned and operated soup & sandwich shop located across from Columbia that has been feeding the campus community for years. When the pandemic hit NYC and students left campus last March, Subsconscious lost the core of their customer base, seeing an 80% drop in business. They are struggling to survive. 


Please help support both a local, family-run business and GWC members who are fighting for fairness and dignity. We are reaching out to several other local businesses in need of support and hoping to partner with them as the strike continues. 

Importantly, please also consider donating to this hardship fund  to stand in solidarity with the GWC. Columbia has threatened not just to withhold strikers' wages, but also to take back graduate student stipends by charging student accounts. This alarming move, in addition to creating a significant financial burden also threatens many workers' status as students at Columbia.
