Family loses 16-year-old son to car accident

On November 26th, 2019, Oscar and his family got involved in a serious car accident. Unfortunately, his mother is still in surgery with a fractured rib affecting a former cancer mass, and trauma to her leg while his youngest sister has 5 broken ribs and a broken collarbone. Luckily his other brother who was involved in the crash was left with only minor bruising, while Oscar was not able to make it out alive. His friends and family can’t express or even put into words the huge loss the entire family has taken.
Oscar Portillo was best known and loved for his contagious laugh and sense of humor. Being a student that was involved immensely with programs like “Dreams and Futures” and “Fly Leadership” program, He had friends from every part of his life. His love for his 4 other siblings and rest of his family was remarkable despite having his father pass away from ALS when he was 12. ALS is a rare disease that affects the nourishment in the brain and spinal cord, causing motor nerves to be affected before they eventually die. This eventually causes all brain and spinal nerve endings to be affected which restricts the ability to eat, move, speak and breathe. As the oldest son in the family, he had various responsibilities as a big brother but never failed to show up to his younger sibling’s graduation ceremonies or even game days. Although his family still struggles with housing, Oscar found sanctuary at his grandmother’s house where he lived while the rest of his family stayed and rented an RV. His friends mourn his loss greatly because of his ability to make others laugh and have a positive, goofy outlook on life.
Our family has endured a total of two losses within the past two years that have taken a toll emotionally.
