Fair Representation for Shane

Donation protected
Thank you for taking the time to read about Shane's situation! His family and friends are very concerned for his wellbeing and are doing everything we can to ensure that he gets a fair trial in the Vietnamese court of law.

The current information we have is very limited but we're working with the American consulate and also just retained a lawyer to defend Shane. We are expecting more information in the coming weeks and will update everyone ASAP.

THE SITUATION
Shane was allegedly involved in a motorcycle accident in January of this year in Vietnam. He woke up in the hospital having no memory of what happened. He was told by the local police that he was in an accident with someone who was riding a bicycle, and that person passed away. Since then, Shane had been working with the police in Ho Chi Minh City for 5-6 months until they formally took him into custody on June 15 (US time).

OUR CONCERN
The details of the incident are not clear (the family has not received any official police reports, hospital reports, etc.) and we’ve noticed several concerning discrepancies between the allegations and the immediate evidence. We just want to ensure he gets fair representation to investigate these discrepancies so that the truth comes to light.

We are very worried about his living conditions, lack of a nutritious diet and lack of proper health care to treat his injuries, and overall treatment in custody. We have been told by numerous sources with ties to Vietnam that the prison conditions and laws protecting prisoners are not those that we are accustomed to here in America.

We’ve also been told that the justice system is very different than we’d expect. We are concerned that being an American, he may not get a fair and timely trial. At this time we really do not have much information to go on and we are trying to get everything clarified ASAP.

THE GOAL
We’ve set the amount of $85,000 because we want to be able to help Shane in anyway we can. As with any legal system, we all know it can be very costly, and at this time we don’t know what to expect.

The first $5,500 will be used to retain a lawyer, and subsequent donations will go toward paying any additional fees that maybe incurred while this investigation is being completed. We will update this page any time funds are used.

NOTE: Any additional funds donated specifically via this Go Fund Me campaign that remain after the investigation that do not go toward investigation/legal costs will be refunded to donors upon request.

NEXT STEPS
We are hopeful that his attorney will get the police and hospital reports to shed more light on the situation. We are told that Shane will be incarcerated for the next four months while the investigation is taking place. He is not allowed to have any visitors at this time, not even family. The consulate is unable to offer much additional help, however they have visited and seen Shane and assured us that he is physically ok at this time.

CONCLUSION
We understand that this situation seems unbelievable and far fetched. We agree, and wish that it wasn’t happening and hope this never happens to any of you. Unfortunately that is not the case, so we are doing everything we can to help bring awareness to the situation. Thank you so much for any help that you can offer. We (and Shane) greatly appreciate it.

Also, Shane knows nothing of this funding request or that everyone is so concerned for him, because we are not able to talk to him. If nothing else please keep him in your prayers and share this with your friends and family.

This account is being run by his family: Sue & John Denoon (parents), Stacy Shipley(sister), and Heather Strange(cousin). We also have set up Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts for Shane to help spread the word.
