Walking Cricket

Since 2019 Walking Cricket has made cricket accessible to older adults, individuals who are semi-retired or retired, it is an adaption of the traditional game of Cricket to suit those with less mobility and cater for different abilities. The whole aim of Walking Cricket is for older men and women who might otherwise struggle with mental well-being or social isolation to come together as teams, where the social aspect of meeting together is as important as the cricket itself.

Delivered in partnership with u3a the sessions provide mental, physical and social stimulation and are open to individuals over the age of 60+. Participants experience many opportunities including tournaments and playing with guest players.

In line with COVID protocols, Walking Cricket is making its return across the county and will provide a vital outlet and activity for adults who as a result of the Pandemic have lacked physical or social interaction.

With sessions currently running in Barnsley, Rotherham, Sheffield, Wakefield and Doncaster and backing received from key cricket legends including Dickie Bird, the appetite for sport is remains high however to continue the Walking Cricket venture we need the support of our local community.

Regular attendee and U3A Walking Cricket advisor Mac McKechnie shows his passion for the sport and how vital the sessions are to keep in contact with his friends through the above video. Many people may be in a similar position and we are aiming to raise awareness of the sport both locally and nationally.

Walking Cricket relies on donations to secure venue hire and kit supplies and the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation are asking for donations to support our kit drive initiative!

Our aim is to ensure 10 kit bags are available for 10 towns or cities across Yorkshire. To complete a successful game of Walking Cricket participants require appropriate equipment including bats, balls and to give a sense of identity, branded kit.

As a charity we aim to make a lasting, positive impact on the lives of those living in Yorkshire and any donation either big or small you can continue to this fantastic initiative will truly make a difference in securing the future of Walking Cricket.
