We are Chris and Toni(the adorable little one is the Foo), often described by our friends as a single entity comprised of 2 people.
Toni suffers daily from a permanent disability – because of scoliosis she has two steel rods fused down her spine. Due to this, she is in constant pain. This is her reality, her normal. The only variable is how much pain she is in. Sometimes on a really good day she can even go without painkillers provided she takes it easy and makes liberal use hot packs.
The week before last Christmas Toni was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Since then she has endured the trials and suffering of chemotherapy and surgery, and all of the complications that her disability has added to this. While both of the chemo and surgery appear to have been quite successful, they have taken their toll. The weekly chemo had to be stopped halfway through as she was hospitalized due to her immune system not working. She had to stop taking some of her daily pain and relaxant medications (they have a blood thinning effect) prior to the surgery, and has been making do with ibuprofen and more strong pain meds since.
Now we are facing radiation therapy. The radiation therapy will consist of treatments EVERY weekday for 5 weeks. The amount of pain and exhaustion she gets from just travelling to and from the hospital for one appointment, means that we require family help at home with our son for several days after. With the radiation therapy being every weekday….. there will be no reprieve, as a weekend isn't enough time for her to recuperate, for 5 weeks. Even with all the medication she has to manage her pain, even one trip there and back, for five days in a row, will be too much. With the therapy going for five weeks, the only option we have is to find her accommodation near the hospital during this time, so that we can avoid the travelling.
Through the hospital foundation we have found a place she can stay, but we’re just inside the minimum distance to qualify for financial help from the foundation. This is where you can help.
We’re seeking $5000. This figure includes not just the accommodation but also a lot of other expenses that will be incurred, such as bringing in family support from interstate, additional data for Toni so she can vid-call with our son, fuel for frequent trips so our son can visit his mummy frequently, and other similar things for support.
If we receive more than we need to use, we will donate excess funds to the hospital foundation that has already helped us so much.
