Brendan Rare Heart

Brendan is a wonderful, spirited and amazing 6 year old who has become the embodiment of a miracle and light to so many. Brendan has been struggling with multiple health issues his whole life of almost 7 years. He was born with two very rare congenital heart defects that ultimately required a full heart transplant when he was just two months away from his second birthday. This was after three other open heart surgeries and multiple heart attacks.

Since his transplant in 2012 he has developed chronic lung disease, chronic kidney disease that is at stage 2 of 5, and is now fighting against post-transplant lymphoperative disease (PTLD) which is the cancer most often caused by Epstein-Barr virus which is typically known as mono. This is a cancer that all transplant patients and their parents dread. He is a very tired little boy who just wants to go home from the hospital.

With that being said, his mom is a single mother of four boys traveling this journey with him without the benefit of a second income. She has worked very hard to instill a strong work ethic in her boys by proving that she can work a 40 hour work week and still support them all no matter if they are sick or well. But she is torn now. She needs to be everywhere at the same time but is most needed by the medical professionals. This means she must be at the hospital knowing that FMLA will only save her job, not pay her. She needs help to keep providing a safe home and vehicle for her children. She would also like to make sure that Brendan gets to experience everything he wants to experience as he decides how much more he can take of the pain of an already prolonged hospitalization. He may choose to never go back. We want to see Brendan and his mother be able to make those choices without her fearing her whole world will fall apart because she's financially exhausted.
