Please consider opening your heart for my father’s heart surgery...

Anyone who knows my dad, Jim (Bob) Santoriello knows that he never asks for help, but is always the first one willing to help anyone and everyone, much to his own detriment at times. A prime example of his giving nature was him not wanting to tell me he was being rushed to the hospital in an ambulance for a heart attack this past weekend, simply because he didn’t want to take away from a previously scheduled family outing or add any unnecessary stressors to my pregnancy.

My father began to have chest pains Thursday evening and brushed it aside as anxiety/stress. However by Saturday morning, he knew something was severely wrong and drove himself to Montrose Memorial Hospital, who then transported him via ambulance directly to Scranton Regional Medical Center. While at Scranton Regional, they brought in a cardiologist to consult with my father who advised him that he had a heart attack and would require multiple bypass surgery due to artery blockages.

At admission to Montrose Memorial Hospital, the initial administering doctor didn’t listen to my dad when he told them he’s Factor 9 (hemophiliac), so they administered anticoagulants, thus preventing emergency surgery as required. Last night, the cardiologist further advised my father that they were refusing further treatment and would be unable to perform surgery on him as the necessary medication alone for post-surgery follow up on Factor 9 would be $30k a day (10 day dosage required). Unfortunately my dad doesn’t have the insurance coverage he needs for such a surgery, and this is only further compounded upon by being Factor 9.

My dad’s an outgoing, intelligent, humorous, loving, deeply caring and humble man. His faith is strong and he is ready to go through this surgery to feel better and go on with his life. My dad has always been a hard and honest worker his entire life. He’s presently self-employed with no insurance and is looking at a minimum 6 week recovery period. We all know that even though our income stops coming in, the bills regretfully don’t. Aside from all of this, I'm equally terrified of the expenses about to land in our laps due to having to private pay this entire procedure outside of what possible emergency Medicaid may cover. Needless to say the cost of this procedure along with its associated hospitalization, medication, follow up treatment, etc., will be staggering.

In truth, I'm putting this out into the universe in hopes of easing some of the horror of this entire process for my dad. Physically and emotionally, I feel underwater. I have no idea what our financial "goal" should be, but if I could just write "life raft" up there, I would. Even the tiniest bit of help will help and so from my crumbling heart to yours, I thank you for reading, giving or further sharing along this campaign with your friends/family.
