Documentary Trailer from 2018 Voyage
eXXpedition is an all-female sailing voyage and scientific research mission that will circumnavigate the globe, covering 38,000 nautical miles. Each of the 30 voyages will have a multi-disciplinary crew of 10 women from around the world that will explore plastics and toxins in our oceans via the five oceanic gyres and the arctic. The women will go to sea as a hands-on crew and experience the devastating effects that single-use plastics have on our oceans and planet. They will conduct world-renowned and cutting-edge scientific research, making the unseen seen, from the toxins in our bodies to toxins in our oceans.
I have been chosen for Leg 14 of eXXpedition and will be sailing from Cairns to Darwin, Australia in July of 2020, studying ocean plastics at the Great Barrier Reef.
But first, I need your help!
Crew members are responsible for paying their own way and I don't have $12,000 sitting in the bank. I cannot do this without your support.
This opportunity is an incredible honor, considering thousands of women applied internationally and only a handful were selected for this voyage after months of Skype interviews and thorough vetting. This might just be the most important thing I'll ever get to do and I'm asking for your help. Please invest in me and our oceans!
Any amount helps!
Even if you can only spare $10, I will forever be grateful.
eXXpedition Cost Estimates:
Crew contribution $5,830 (food, gear, insurance, mooring fees)
Flight to Cairns $2000
Flight home from Darwin $2000
Hotel while on land in Cairns $300
Hotel while on land in Darwin $450
+ passport, visas, immunizations, transportation, and gofundme fees
August 2019: $1,822 (deposit)
January 2020: $2,004 (second payment)
February 2020: $4,750 (flights and hotels)
April 2020: $2,004 (final payment)
Anything over my $12,000 goal will be donated to eXXpedition.
Upon our return, our crew of extraordinary women, from scientists and writers to filmmakers and photographers, will advocate for the ocean, raise awareness, and inspire change through our individual careers.
I plan to author a series of non-fiction books about ocean plastics for Capstone Publishers, focusing on 4th-9th grade reading levels. I will use compelling storytelling to educate and inspire future generations. Books would be in schools across the country and on sale at Barnes and Noble and on Amazon just like many of the other 120+ books I've worked on over the past six years.
I'm currently a senior content manager at Meredith Corporation, where I write and edit digital newsletters for Better Homes & Gardens, Martha Stewart, and Real Simple. With nearly 4 million daily subscribers to the content I curate, I have an incredible outlet to connect with women and to grow our tribe of changemakers. I'll continue to raise awareness, promote eco-friendly companies, and shine a light on the badass women changing the world. I will make environmental issues a part of their every day, focusing on the immediate actions they can take as consumers, such as eliminating single-use plastics, buying products with minimal packaging, and using products without harsh chemicals. In the last couple of years, we've seen sustainability, zero-waste lifestyles, and natural beauty really take off and I will continue to be the fuel behind it, pushing every piece of eco-friendly content our edit teams create.
1 million single-use plastic bags are discarded every minute worldwide
Only 9% of plastic is recycled globally
8 million tons of plastic waste makes its way into our oceans every year
Every piece of plastic that has ever been made still exists
By 2050, there will be more plastic in the ocean than fish
Please help me save our oceans!
