Exceptional Children's Garden

Donation protected
Our students are special needs students with disabilities ranging from down syndrome, autism, cerebral palsy to mild to moderate cognitive delays.

At Andrews High School, we are trying to create an atmosphere of lifelong learning.  The garden is the epicenter of our life-skills project.  We are facilitating the development of independence and achievement. Our program emphasizes the development of independent skills in a wide variety of areas. Vocational, communication, leisure, social, self-help, domestic and cooking skills are addressed in activities at and around Andrews High School garden.

Last fall we began preparing the space with the students by weeding and collecting seeds and needed supplies for indoor seed starting in the spring. In the spring we tilled the soil and met with a representative from our local cooperative extension office to get needed information for planting. We then had an expert come and repair our cistern water retention and watering system. A member of our community came and tilled all of our raised beds.

We then planted seeds with our students indoors, in February, and then transplanted them outside into our 32 raised beds. We walked the garden daily to make observations, weeded and picked herbs and vegetables as available.

We are now ready to expand our program and need financial assistance with the purchase of a greenhouse, push mowers, hand tools and a watering system.
